As part of the execution stage in the FCP triangle, this week at NTU I have been given an editorial by Fashion Photographer Tim Gutt, December 2010, to research and analyse in preparation for my task to create my own photoshoot inspired by this existing one.
Tim Gutt was not a photographer I was familiar with before being given this task however, his work is creatively inspiring to me. I like his style and the way he interprets a concept telling the story of it through his editorial. The editorial my group was given was featured in the December 2010 edition of vogue and correlated fashion with star signs. The shoot was done in a studio and the set designer was Shona Heath. The style of the set reminded me of photographer, Tim Walker who has also worked closely with Shona Heath. The use of artificial lighting and the muted colours/ pastel tones also resembled the work of Tim Walker, another one of my favourite fashion photographers. I think the cooler tones of the photographs in this editorial suited the edition as it was published in December, one of the colder months. The theme of star signs is also very appropriate for the issue as it visualises a year in review and encourages you to reminisce on the year just passed and also the new year quickly approaching. Everyone has a star sign and whether you believe or not it is very difficult to not form an attachment to your sign. Therefore, this editorial may bring a personal connection to the images, engrossing the readers in fashion photography.
Star signs are a trend that comes and goes quite frequently. It was a major trend in the 70's and over the last 5-6years 70's style has become more globally recognised by the fashion industry with florals and stripes becoming key components of everyone's wardrobes. Therefore I understand why star signs were used in this issue of Vogue, however, I feel like star signs are over popularised and are used too much. Therefore, this particular shoot by Gutt is not my favourite of his work. I like the set design by Shona Heath and I like the way they have interpreted this overrated trend however, it is not my favourite piece of his work.
