Back to the Future: The Trend Cycle

Over the last few years it has become apparent to me that fashion trends from the past are being repeated and elements of these trends can be found in our current wardrobe. Past trends are constantly being predicted as future trends, as found on databases such as WGSN, Everybody talks about the new trends but many of these 'new' trends have been seen before. One of my many interests in fashion is its history and how history repeats itself. A particular trend that has been brought to life again over the last couple of years is 90's grunge. This trend was seamlessly transitioned from the 90's to the 00's with only a slight variation in the styles. This relaxed style has become a huge trend in the last few years being adapted into high fashion as well as high street style. It is a trend that has been promoted heavily by celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, who is heavily admired by trend setters (i.e the youth of today). 90's grunge is a trend that I have been a part of however, it is one that I feel becoming worn in a way that isn't what it should be. I have seen this trend worn by celebrities on the red carpet and to formal events. Many would say that this is the future however, it is not something I am a fan of. When I wear this trend I wear it to the gym or to the supermarket, as a casual look which is what I think would be an appropriate interpretation of the trend. However, it is has been adapted to be a more high fashion, fancy fashion to suit various situations relevant to modern day life. This is something that I have spotted not only with this trend but with many others such as 70's flares and 80's fever.
