My Top 5: Covers of 2016

2016 has seen some amazing photography featured on the covers of various magazines. Here are my top 5 covers that have impressed me and caught my attention throughout the last year.

5. The September issue of British Vogue this year featured the fresh faced Cara

Delevigne making her 5th appearance as cover girl. The cover was shot by Mario Testino, a fashion photographer whose work I really like. I like his use of bold colours - his shoots often feature colours such as blue and orange creating eye-catching, statement photographs, which is certainly the case for this cover.

4. Vanity fair was chosen by Caitlynn Jenner to share the story of her transition. It was one of the most anticipated photographs of 2016 and the cover encapsulated everything that her transition was about. Stripped back and minimalistic, the cover did not disappoint.

3. i-D magazine's covers are iconic and known for the consistency in the photography displayed. Their minimalistic covers reflect a modern simplistic form not bombarding the reader with headlines and junk gossip, which the articles often don't reflect at all. The photography displayed is used to sell the magazine, placing a lot of responsibility on the quality of the image. i-D has developed a strong identity in the fashion industry and continues to stay true to itself month on month.

2. In march of this year Rihanna took the plunge of combining film with fashion in honour of the 40th anniversary of Jaws. In a Chanel swimsuit she graced the cover of Harper's BAZAAR in a stand out cover in my opinion. The tenuous link, if any link at all, between the film and the pop sensation is what I like most about the cover. It sparks an interest into the content of the magazine and leaves the audience curious and confused. This cover stands out to me because of the image. The post-production of the image is amazing and the image itself is an incredible piece of creativity.

1. The august cover of New York is ranked my number 1 covers of 2016. Serena Williams graced the cover in an elegant shot by Norman Jean Roy. Roy captured Serena in a graceful way very different to how she is usually perceived, especially after such a terrific year in the world of tennis. The somewhat aggressive sport doesn't typically portray women in a sexy, glamorous way however, this cover has allowed her image to evolve showing women can be strong physically and still be elegant and graceful. This is a message that I feel isn't often portrayed through fashion photography, which is why this cover appeals to me the most out of all of the amazing covers 2016 has brought.
