I have definitely had one heck of a start to the new year that is going to be hard to beat in the rest of 2017. I have dreamed of visiting the big apple for as long as I can remember and I was lucky enough to get the opportunity this past week with my course. I was a typical tourist with my camera around my neck capturing all the iconic landmarks the city has to offer, but as an FCP student I was able to visit some hidden gems of the city that were truly amazing and fascinating places to see.

One of the many great aspects of the trip was a tour of the garment district we were able to go on which included visiting many unique businesses and people that have become very successful and grown a company in the big city. A visit to a handmade fabric flowers workshop called custom fabric flowers was definitely one of my favourite parts of the garment district tour. Meeting with the father and son amongst this family business and hearing about the many generations that have been a part of the production of these luxury fabric flowers that have been made for major events and brands, such as Chanel and the Victoria's Secret fashion show, was really inspiring. Hearing how they started as a small company and experiencing struggles as a small, independent company in the big city, was really inspiring and interesting. As a student with a background in product design it was also really interesting to see the production line and process that it took to produce a flower.

The next stop on the tour was a visit to Mood Fabrics in the garment district. It was amazing to see all of the different varieties of fabric and a wide range of patterns, subtle and bold. I really enjoyed this part of the tour as it was fascinating to watch customers at the store go through their selection process of fabrics. It was an interesting environment to be in and I learnt a lot about the process from our guide of the garment district, Imani Alexander. Hearing about her journey with her fashion line, Oasis Soho was great and gave me a good insight into the industry and what is involved in designing and creating a clothing line in a city as big as NY.

After Mood Fabrics we visited Laruicci, a megawatt jewellery company who designs statement jewellery for some of the biggest stars going. We were able to see pieces worn by people like Beyonce and Rihanna as well as meet the man in charge of publicity. Preston was the publicist for many of the companies in that building and it was interesting to hear about the work he does on the job. We were also able to meet with the Wanderlust Girls and hear about their greatly successful blog and how they built their brand. This was particularly interesting as it was something I could apply to my work now as part of my course and the blog brief I was set.

Overall, the garment district tour was one of the many highlights of my New York trip and it was truly an experience I will remember for as long as I live. It was a great opportunity to gain an insight into the fashion industry in New York.
