My Take On the MET Gala

The MET is known for its crazy themes challenging the stars when it comes to their fashion. It is my most anticipated event in the fashion calender. Every year I look for the biggest surprises on the carpet, the fails and the faultless. This year however, was a bit disappointing for me. Here are some of my thoughts on the 2017 MET Gala fashion.

This year the theme for the MET Gala was Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garcons. This theme was a bit different to ones of recent years as Rei Kawakubo is the first living designer as subject since Yves Saint Laurent in 1983. Andrew Bolton, curator of the MET's costume institute told Vogue that "Rei Kawakubo is one of the most important and influential designers of the past 40 years.. inviting us to rethink fashion as a site of constant creation." Therefore celebrities were encouraged to be creative and rethink fashion. After learning of the theme of the gala I expected the fashion to be a bit more outgoing and wild than it was. I was honestly a bit underwhelmed by some stars, whom I thought would have done more with the theme.

Here are some of the looks from the gala and my thoughts:

Gisele Bündchen wore a silver Stella McCartney gown with a cut out back and long sleeves. As well as a simple gown, Gisele kept her makeup and hair very minimal. The theme of the MET wanted the guests to experiment with their fashion and overall look which, Gisele definitely didn't do. This looks like an ordinary red carpet look that she could have worn at any event. As she is a supermodel, I expected her to take an interest in fashion and the theme.

Blake Lively's Versace feathered gown was definitely a stand out of night for me. This photo is ultimately so satisfying the way it matches the carpet. That is just my OCD brain talking however, I really like the texture to the dress and the way it fits her. Although it is not completely on theme it was one of the closest looks of the night. Kawakubo's designs feature a lot of texture, many similar to the bottom of Blake's gown. This was one of my favourite looks of the night.

Kim Kardashian is someone who's wardrobe is anticipated on a daily basis let alone at an event in fashion as big as the MET. However, this was very underwhelming. This white Vivienne Westwood design showed off her famous figure however, was nothing like the theme of the event in my opinion. The only part of her look somewhat related to the theme is her off-the-shoulder cut of the gown. Kim stated after the event that her minimalistic look was a reflection of her new take on life following the Paris robbery.

Joan Smalls showed up wearing a custom Topshop gown. The red colour was definitely fitting to the theme however, the cut and fit of the dress is very traditional. The opposite of Kawakubo/ Comme des Garcons.

Power duo John Legend and Chrissy Teigan stunned in a monochrome palette both experimenting with texture. John wore a Burberry wool tuxedo while Chrissy wore a sheer Marchesa gown. Texture seems to be the part of the theme celebs were experimenting with the most. It is a common theme throughout the looks featred on the carpet.

Overall, I expected a lot more from the stars on the carpet and thought they could have explored the theme a lot more.
