After reading a recent article by Vogue UK on the career of Rick Owens, I was inspired to dig out my coffee table book. I was gifted this book a while ago, and now being an FCP student, I can fully appreciate the designs of Rick Owens.
The day before Rick Owens received his CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award, Vogue UK facetime'd the busy man for a candid chat. He was in Venice at the time and began to show his penthouse with a view of "beaming sunlight" and "blue skies". The designer claimed this was his second facetime so was a bit rusty. After showing the view he then went on to explain the difference from his Brooklyn apartment and how riding the subway to work everyday takes some time. This wasn't always his life though. Owens grew up in a small town in California where he then went on to study painting which he quickly traded for pattern-making. His career in fashion began in 2002, when his first ready-to-wear collection was featured at NYFW. The item that kickstarted his fashion fame was his asymmetrical leather jacket, that has been replicated by many brands.
Rick Owen's work is one I admire greatly for his ability to make mundane clothing interesting and adapt staple pieces. His creative flare is unique and recognisable as his own. The compilation of images and interviews by Terry Jones is great and I have displayed some of my favourites in the gallery above. I admire the photography and the work. Rick Owens is quickly becoming one of the people I am looking out for the most and am starting to hear more about him.
